As a “prop” it’s very nice. It has an old-fashioned “steampunk” look to it. The presentation is very nice, too. It has steel nibs (as opposed to brass), which adds both a contrast in appearance as well as somewhat more durability. As an actual writing tool, well, frankly I didn’t find it at all useful. I have rather large hands, and the metal portion of this thing barely came stayed on my hand. Most of the time, I had the feather resting against it, which messes up the feather somewhere. Since they’re using real feathers (from the picture, I thought it was a hammered or shaped brass imitation feather), your feather will almost certainly NOT look as nice as the one in the picture – mine didn’t even come close. The writing itself is scratchy if you have a heavy hand. It being a dip-pen, you’ll need to acquire the skills to avoid blotchiness, but the writing even for an experienced dip pen user is still inconsistent. If you’re used to the Speedball style of pen nib, this isn’t one of them (although the Speedball nibs WILL fit it). The fitting of the nibs, however, is very tight and needle-nosed pliers are a requirement when changing them out. I’ve found this to be the case in 90% of all pen holders, so it’s not a down-check, just an observation. Of the pen nibs, only one was really practical for straight up writing. Others for calligraphy (which I don’t do) were tried, but I was looking more for practical scribing than calligraphy. Still, even then, the line was inconsistent and blotchy and it didn’t have a lot of durability when it came to time between dips. The reservoirs are kind of small, so there’s a lot more dipping (increasing the chances of drips and blotches) than I’d like. I decided I did not like the pen and gave it 2 stars. Note that my review has three stars. My wife LIKES the pen. She has a lighter touch and smaller hand and it works a whole lot better for her than for me. So it became her gift and I added a star. The reason why it didn’t get more is that although it looks cool, the kind of ugly feather it came with isn’t anything like the picture, there was really only one nib that worked well enough. The others kind of worked, though not so well. They had short ink life and other issues that make me think doing calligraphy with them would be an exercise in frustration. The ink is sort of a cross between venous red and arterial red, and it’s got a nice old-fashioned look to it. As a serious writing instrument, it was seriously lacking. I do recommend buying some Speedball B5 (Medium line) or A5 (fine line) nibs for it to improve the writing duration if you’re going to use it a lot. Otherwise the nibs you get take a lot more care when writing than normal for a dip pen. For a prop, it looks cool. For a heavy or large-handed writer, it isn’t going to please. For a lighter and small-handed writer, it will probably be liked, but not for long-term use. So if you get this, consider the person who will use it, why it’s being used and choose wisely. Great condition but I am a bit disappointed with the quill tips, they do not fit properly. To use them I have to use pliers to make them small enough to fit. I’d recommend getting different ink and writing on parchment paper or just some kind of thicker paper than notebook or printer. But it looks great and writes well with most of the nibs.
