This review is from: Brain Games for Dogs: Fun Ways to Build a Strong Bond with Your Dog and Provide It with Vital Mental Stimulation (Paperback)
I have prior experience training dogs, not professionally, but as well-trained pets. I was looking for what was promised for some fun work with a very bright Shepherd puppy.
This book does not have much in the way of “brain games,” it’s really just a primer on tricks and interactive basic games crossed with a very busy DK type format. For a book with this given premise to actually have a page on teaching “shake” is absurd. If billed as creative thinking activities, I want that.
If you are a beginner, never really worked with a thinking dog or want to expand on your relationship and don’t know where to start, than this might work, though I don’t love the busy format. This might be good for an older child learning to train, the pictures are reasonably good. If you are more experienced and looking for something creative, look elsewhere. I was disappointed by this book and am going to return it.

Most of the games in this book involve at least a little training with your dog. The first two chapters review the basics of training using treats and a clicker. Many of the “games” are what I would consider tricks. The book contiuously emphasizes that it should be fun and positive for you and the dog so it does feel like a game. I did have a lot of fun teaching my dog to jump over a broomstick and other objects. Most games have step by step instructions and good illustrations but the print is very tiny.
If you dog already knows the basics and you would like to teach her a few more tricks and activities, then I would recommend this book. It does take some effort on the owners part.

I’ve read a lot of dog training books, but this is the best one I’ve seen. It has a great variety of games, and also a lot of mentally and physically challenging exercises that are really fun for both you and your dog. I was impressed at how clearly everything was explained so that it’s easier to teach your dog. There were some pretty easy tricks, and some advanced ones. There is something for every type of dog in this! The author even has tricks pertaining to the type of dog you have – whether it be a hound, herding dog, or whatever other group.
I have trained my dog over 10 tricks, and we literally ran out of tricks, because I didn’t know what else I could teach him. Other books have the typical tricks that my dog knows, but this book has been the only one that has plenty of original and fun tricks for him to learn, on top of what he’s already been trained. I highly recommend this!
