This review is from: Brio Classic Figure 8 Set (Toy)
Brio trains lasted my son from age 2 until age 13. The ONLY toy that can claim an 11 year interest span. As he got older we added pieces and by the time he was 13 we had a major metropolis on the living room floor. This toy encouraged his imagination and entertained him for HOURS. As a college freshman my son is a young man whose creativity, organization and imagination far surpasses his class mates. Brio has the BEST beginning sets and their track is superior. We started adding buildings from Thomas the Tank Engine and they work perfectly.

I read the German ‘Stiftung Warentest’ too late, after I had ordered it for Xmas, and decided due to increased toxin levels in the paint, to return it. It completely failed the test, which was really disappointing, as it seems the same results were shown THREE years ago. And no changes made?! Well, my kids are not gonna play with these trains then, I guess. Too sad as they look really nice!

REASON FOR PURCHASE: Whenever we go to our local toy store, my toddler daughter loves to look at the model trains rolling around the tracks. Brio train sets are quality stuff, but tend to be too expensive for my budget. This particular set was on an Amazon Lightning Deal at the time of purchase for $30. At that price, I decided to take the plunge.
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS: All pieces are made of wood. Paint jobs are simple, but feel high quality and do not seem like the kind that would chip easily. Track pieces are cut with precision and fit with other pieces easily and well. Figure eight was easy to make with included pieces. The station and tree pieces are purely decorative, but adds to aesthetics of the set nicely.
Trains are well made. Wheels are sturdy and roll smoothly with little resistance. The cars connect to each other by magnets. Magnets are strong enough to hold cars together during regular play.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS: This set does not come with a battery-powered train, so the trains would have to be manually pushed..For those unfamiliar with Brio, pieces from different sets are interchangeable. Cars from other sets connect with these cars and track pieces are essentially the same. We found a larger set at deep discount in a brick and mortar store that combined with this set flawlessly. That set did have a battery-powered train. My daughter likes to watch the trains go by themselves, so having a self-moving car from the other set was perfect.
FINAL IMPRESSION: Overall great as a beginner set or as an expansion to other sets owned. This set does not come with a battery-powered train piece, which would have been a nice thing to have given the price of the set. I feel that the MSRP is a bit high, but with discounts, the toy is a great buy. My daughter frequently asks to break out the train set and enjoys it when I sit down with her to help with her masterpieces. I personally feel that building tracks encourages creativity and problem solving that’s similar to playing with Legos or doing a floor puzzle. It’s nice to see a toy these days that’s quality, but not reliant on TV screens or heavy-duty electronics.
