I am a fairly experienced (Been at it over 2 years.) needle felter. I ordered this for my 8yro daughter to get her involved. I really didn’t need the supplies but I thought the book would be great/basic kid friendly patterns.
The book is fantastic kid friendly basic patterns, lots of pictures, showing them every step! The wool is good quality and fantastic kid crazy colors. The foam pad is good, give it 5-10 min to let it air up and get it’s full size. Lastly the needles are exactly as intended. After reading the reviews I assumed they would be low quality brittle needles, I have experienced some cheap needles before. These were not at all like that. These are good quality but one of the first tips I learned as a felter is to always go out the same way you went in and never try to move the wool with the needle…or you end up with broken ones. When my daughter got the kit, she made a bunny right away and had no problems with the needles, so I tried them out, making a little fox. They worked great and had no problems.
The only thing I would suggest is a finer needle grade if you are going to use all 3. These are a somewhat course needle, I’m guessing a size 36-ish, they grab a lot of wool and because this is made for kids that is prob a good idea….faster results! When using 3 at a time a 40 would probably be better, but regardless, the needles are not the problem…..more then likely inexperience and kids running them is 🙂
I love the kit and would suggest it to anyone, I will be ordering more around the holidays for some of the cousins. Felting is a great craft, they use the most basic shapes and are so excited to see what they made!
Shut the TV off, turn the music on and enjoy…..you don’t want any visual distractions because saying the needle is sharp is an understatement!

I bought this book at Michael’s (although it looks a little cheaper here) and gave it to my 9 year old for her birthday. She made a cat and it was pretty cute. Her second animal was even better – I’m so impressed. The needles can be a little tricky and sharp but they didn’t break for us like the other reviewers. If you have a little crafter in your house who wants to try something new, this is a great kit.

I bought this for my daughter after her hamster died as a project to keep her busy. She is almost 10. We worked on it together and it is very therapeutic. It is a slow process and we are enjoying the chat time while we make it. We have had several laughs as we are putting it together. Sometimes the head looks really oversized but we put it on to make ourselves laugh about how silly it looks. She is very sad about loosing her hamster but this craft has really helped us enjoy time together and create a cute animal. I don’t think she could do this project on her own yet. This is our first time felting. I am not a crafty person at all and it’s easy for me to do. The reason it is a 10 and up toy is because there are 3 needles. My daughter is very careful and we haven’t had any issues with poked fingers or the needles breaking. Klutz has a clear guarantee written out on the back of the toy that if you’re not satisfied to please call them. Maybe they have improved the needle since the last reviewers?
I’d recommend this for anyone that is not crafty, someone who wants to spend quality time with their child, or for a child who needs some down time or therapy. We absolutely love it!
