This is definitely a juvenile train set. Despite what Amazon says in its description, the locomotive has no operating headlight and no lights whatsoever. The crew announcements are done in a high-pitched child’s voice. The cars are smaller than normal O scale rolling stock cars. The new remote control that comes with this train set has a cheaper “feel” to it. The forward and reverse dial slides freely instead of having “click stops” for increases in speed. The train seems to pick up speed or slow down without changing the speed dial. Overall, it’s just a very cheap feeling train set. It might be okay for a young child, but I would not consider it a “starter set” that one would want to build on. There are other Lionel Lion-Chief Remote train sets like the Polar Express or even the Scout that would make better “starter sets”.

I was happy to see a Lionel train set like this one go on sale for the holidays, as I have been looking for a set that I could use around my Christmas tree. When I bought the set, it seemed like a fair price for the train given the features it was advertised to have. The shipping was very fast, the train looks great, was easy to assemble, and is sturdy. However, I did encounter a problem with the set that I hope Amazon or Lionel will resolve given the train sets price tag. Right out of the box the headlight on the train was not functional. This was a feature I was looking forward to having, and for how much this train retails for the light should at least work out of the box in my opinion. I did a little research on the Lionel website and on the Amazon listing page, and they both advertise that the train has an operating headlight. My product does not, and this was very disappointing. When I opened the box I was hoping to give this product 5 stars based on the appearance, but since the headlight on the train does not work I could only give it a 2 star rating.

Overall and great starter train set! I was surprised at how loud the announcements and bells are, also the headlight was non functional on this train too! My son will love and the price was great, got it on sale, but disappointed that headlight not working.
