While I am far from a fountain pen connoisseur, during the past year I have pleasantly rediscovered why, unlike slide rules for example, there are still many fountain pen manufacturers despite overwhelming technological advances in writing instruments. Fountain pens engender a personal, almost intimate, relationship with their users. Each one seems to have a unique personality. The ones you get along with stick around, but there is nothing more irritating and annoying than using a fountain pen whose personality simply clashes with its owner’s style. In my hands these pens have very short lives.
In the past year I’ve purchased and used about 10 different fountain pens ranging in cost from a high of $77.57 for Parker Sonnet purchased from “Amazon Warehouse Deals” in “used, like new” condition, to a low of $7.70 for the pen under review. Of these ten pens, seven are history and three are current daily users: the Parker Sonnet using Noodler’s “American Eel Blue” ink, a Lamy Safari ($24.62) using Chesterfield “Fire Opal” ink, and the Jinhao pen under review using Chesterfield “Rose” ink.
I am absolutely amazed with the writing quality of this pen! Its smoothness approaches closely that of the Parker Sonnet and equals or exceeds that of the Lamy Safari. It is also easily the most physically substantial of the three, having the broadest body and weighing about 35.75gm versus 26.25gm for the Parker Sonnet, and 17.5gm for the Lamy Safari. It is certainly personal preference, but I find the physical size of the Jinhao to be quite pleasant, emanating a quiet but undeniable confidence.
This pen – the least expensive fountain pen I have ever purchased – has quickly occupied a spot in my lineup of daily favorites and is the best value of any fountain pen with which I have personal experience. Time will tell if this Jinhao pen will perform as well over the long term and I will update this review should any untimely problems arise.
For now, I’m a pleasantly surprised, very happy camper. i next want to acquire a daily use fountain pen I will load with a very red ink. Jinhao is going to get first shot at that job.

This pen looks very nice and writes well. After washing and rinsing the nib and converter, I loaded it with ink and wrote. It took only a second to begin putting down ink. Now, it writes straight away and puts down ink impressively. The only drawback is that it seems to only take its own converter, and does not seem to take standard international carts, but it is a good writer and I like its style. I think it is a good pen for the cost.
Additionally, you need to know that Aplustore seems very customer oriented and goes out of its way to ensure satisfaction. The service is exceptional. I am overwhelmed. Truly A+.
