Puzzle pieces could use an overhaul., April 12, 2016 By Macaroo (Rocky Mountains of Colorado) – Verified Purchase(What’s this?) This review is from: Melissa & Doug Pets at Play Jigsaw Puzzle (24-Piece) (Toy) Melissa and Doug Pets at Play Wooden Puzzle 24 Piece Puzzle Melissa and Doug Pets at Play Wooden Puzzle 24 Piece Puzzle is just one of many new additions to my grandson every growing collection of puzzles. When my own children were younger they too had a large collection of puzzles but many of them were destroyed as a result of a house fire several years ago. So with the birth of our first grandchild in 2012 I started the process of rebuilding our collection of puzzles. Three years later, I am happy to report the Lamle puzzle reserve has quickly grown and even happier to discover that my grandson, Owen, enjoys the challenge of a puzzle, as much as his father did. He works very hard (task persistence) to complete a puzzle “all by puzzle by myself”.Puzzles encourage development in children in so many different areas that it would be impractical to list them all in a review such as this. Puzzles are a cornerstone in early learning and found in virtually in every childcare center, preschool, and homes. I would guess most of you reading this review have done a handful of puzzles. So, rather than add to the reason of why you should or shouldn’t choose this puzzle let me explain what I, a former teacher, curriculum designer, and learning specialist, look for when I buy a puzzle. First I start with some easy observations, like:Type of Puzzle: The Melisa and Doug Pets and Play Puzzle is what a call a “framed puzzle”• Meaning the puzzle in enclosed in an outer frame of some type. This is especially nice for younger children because the frame shows the size of the completed puzzle and gives a child an idea of how many pieces fit it will take to build a side or section of a puzzle. Other type of puzzles for young children include floor puzzles, peg puzzles, multi solution puzzles, self-correcting puzzles, puzzle flashcards, and 3D puzzles (to name a few 🙂———————————— Target Age: In this case, I can confidently say that the “Pets at Play is geared for children ages 2 to 5 and for children who have mastered 12 piece puzzles and peg puzzles and are ready for something more challenging.• At times is can be tricky to determine an age range for a puzzle. This is because, generally speaking, as a child is exposure and practice with puzzles increases so does their ability. Conversely, a child with learning challenges often benefit more from puzzles, which are designed for much younger children. ———————————— Puzzle Frame: Is the puzzle frame durable and holds puzzle pieces securely, while allowing for needed space to assemble the puzzle?• Yes, the puzzle frame is made of wood, (not cardboard like some manufactures) and is very durable. • The frame holds the completed puzzle pieces snuggly but still allows the necessary room need when putting pieces together. ———————————— Puzzle Picture: Is the puzzle’s picture age and interest appropriate? Does the appeal to both genders? If this is a puzzle geared for young children, does the picture encourage vocabulary development?• Yes, the playful colorful illustration of pets is definitively age and interest appropriate. • Yes, the puzzle absolutely encourages a young child’s verbal development. • Additionally, the puzzle could be used in a guided play or directed play setting and children could be asked questions such as: i.e. How many doggies can you find? How many kitties do you see? Who is the horse playing with? Can you find the snake? The pet scene is so detailed and appealing that the puzzle scene alone is an excellent feature. ———————————— As you can see from my review the Melissa and Doug Puzzle excels in all the above areas, but this not the case in other areas that I look at when evaluating a puzzles educational value. For example: Puzzle pieces: Just like when I evaluate a puzzle’s frame, it is important to note the quality and durability.• Nearly all of Melissa and Doug’s puzzles are made of wood and therefore more durable than those made of cardboard. However, I have found that the newer Melisa and Doug puzzle pieces are somewhat lacking from those my children had. • The actual Melissa and Doug puzzle pieces are comprised of several thin layers of wood and from what I can tell each layer is then glued together. But unlike the older Melissa and Doug puzzles, which were then coated with some type of laminate around each individual pieces, the new pieces do not appear to have the same outer shell and are therefore more prone to splitting (one of our other puzzle has all-ready had to be replaced because several of the pieces split) • Pieces do not come apart as easily (I have noticed that all… Read more Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? | Comments (2) Reply 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful My kids LOVE this puzzle… and so do I! High quality!, March 24, 2015 By Rangers68 – Verified Purchase(What’s this?) This review is from: Melissa & Doug Pets at Play Jigsaw Puzzle (24-Piece) (Toy) My 2.5 yr old LOVES LOVES LOVES this puzzle. After showing her one time, she figured out how to put the puzzle pieces together by herself and now can complete it within a few minutes. She still loves it, but I did buy her the next puzzle up with more pieces to challenge her. This puzzle is beautifully constructed — sturdy pieces, beautiful colors, fun picture. My 1.5 yr old likes it too, but still a little hard for him to do. I am very pleased with the wooden board that comes with it as it allows the puzzle to be completed on uneven surfaces and holds the puzzle together. It also gives a little outline for little ones to understand where the borders are. I will definitely be buying more Melissa and Doug wooden puzzles. Worth the price! This review is from: Melissa & Doug Pets at Play Jigsaw Puzzle (24-Piece) (Toy) We are beginning to aquire quite a collection of these puzzles as they are definitely a hit with my 2 year old. We started with the 12 piece sets but after they no longer proved to be a challenge, moved on to the 24 piece sets which she is now doing on her own with ease. The pieces are a bit tight at first but losen over time with use, thus making it easier for little ones to put together and disassemble. They are not so tight that my daughter has had issues or gotten frustrated while doing them. She loves the various themes and would often sit on her own and do these puzzles without being prompted. I love them because they make for easy storage. After completing these puzzles they are left in their wooden frame then stacked on each other and put away. Thus far none of the pieces are unaccounted for. I also love the fact that they are wooden as my daughter has a tendency to put everything in her mouth. The cardboard puzzles become soaked and she chews on them. Not good, I know. I highly recommend these puzzles, especially for younger kids.
