I ordered the 6 foot medium action and selected the free 2-day shipping option from Amazon Prime. I ordered it on a Friday and it came on Monday as expected. I spooled it with 15 pound test Power Pro braided line and this thing CASTS A COUNTRY MILE!!! I’ve been using lures that range from senko worms and jitterbugs as small as 1/8 ounce to crankbaits and buzzbaits up to 3/4 of an ounce and it preforms very well. This is my first 2-piece fishing rod. I’ve never trusted 2-piece rods because I’ve seen people cast with them and their rod comes apart but I have not had that problem with the Ugly Stik. It’s a great combo and it has handled every fishing challenge so far. I caught a 6 pound largemouth bass today with it and the Ugly Stik handled it very well for such a light looking setup. Looks can be deceiving this thing is TOUGH AS NAILS! The reel is very smooth and holds a lot of line. HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS COMBO!

I like my Ugly Stik rods. Two days ago, I bought the 6′ two piece Ugly Stik BX2 Spinning Combo, Medium action. I loaded it with 12# test monofilament and could cast a 5/16 oz spinner 50-60′ and a 3/8 oz lure 60-70′. I hooked a 33″ Coho salmon today, which fought for 12 minutes before we brought it in and released it. It didn’t overtax the rod, nor did the rod seem too powerful for the fish.
Pros: 1. Easy casting. 2. Light 3. Sturdy 4. Good grip 5. Flat black rod finish, reducing rod flash which can spook fish. 6. Modest rod graphics. 7. Reel adaptable to left or right retrieve
Cons: 1. The reel. The bail whacked my knuckles if I held the rod, bare-handed or gloved, with more than one finger past the reel support arm. 7/8″ between the bail and the grip didn’t quite suffice to clear my knuckles. The reel support arm needs 1/4″-1/2″ more length to keep your knuckles out of the whack path, unless you have small hands or can remember to hold the rod with the support arm of the reel between your forefinger and middle finger. Holding the rod with just my index finger above the support arm, I had no contact with the grip above the reel seat. The reel requires me to think about re-positioning my rod hand when I’m playing a fish. Hold the rod on the grip above the reel improves leverage against the fish. 2. The reel, again. After casting, turning the crank handle didn’t consistently flip the bail–I’d often have to make a second greater effort. After the salmon battle, I could feel and hear the reel turning, unlike better reels. 3. I would have like a mark on each segment at the joint to help me align the rod segments as I often have to readjust after the first attempt. I could apply dots of nail polish myself but reel issues made me take the combo back to my local small box retailer.
Bottom line: a well regarded rod for good reason and a functioning reel (unknown longevity). With the rods alone at $40, no one could fault you for thinking this a really good deal at $50, but you really get what you pay for. A $10 reel is a $10 reel.

It’s been years since I’ve been fishing, and my wife bought me this Ugly Stik GX2 combo as a gift.
I’d never even used an open real before, and being a relatively cheap set up, I didn’t know what to expect.
So far the pole has been flawless. It casts easy once you get the hang of it. Reels smoothly, and seems well built. It also is pretty sharp looking with a cool red chrome kinda finish on parts of the rod and reel.
I’m sure a more expensive pole would be betteflr, but for someone who’s just getting into fishing, or as an upgrade to an old set up, this this is a winner. You won’t find much better for the price.
