This review is from: Star Wars Chess Set / Chess Game Board with Star Wars Figurines Chess Pieces (Game Board Size 17″ x 17″) (Toy)
My kids love the pieces. They had fun determining which pieces would correspond to which standard chess piece. The pieces seem to be of reasonable quality. We have not had a problem yet. My only criticism is the board is of poor quality. It’s a cheap cardboard, and the orientation on my board is incorrect. If you open the board as intended, with Star Wars logo in front of each player, and with crease running horizontally, then the black square is in the lower right hand corner. With chess you need the white square in the bottom right corner (the picture that accompanies this product shows an improper setup (although the board in the picture would actually be fine if they moved the pieces 90 degrees, but that is not how my board is constructed)). You can of course rotate the board, with crease running vertically and logos on the side, it’s just a bit awkward. I’m still glad I got the pieces. We will probably end up using them on a different board though.

I wouldn’t recommend this for kids starting to learn chess.
Other reviewers have touched on the problems we found, I’ll summarize and expand: 1 – The chess board is misprinted. This is a big deal. A chess board has the white or red square on the bottom right. If you’re going to learn chess, knowing how to orient the board is one of the basics. The board that comes with this set is standard cheap cardboard with a printed sticker on it, and “Star Wars” printed along two opposing sides, indicating how the board should be oriented, but if you orient it that way the red/white square is on your left corner, not the right. This is BAD, and by itself is reason enough not to buy this board if you intend for a youngster to learn chess using this board.
The manual that comes with the game has a picture of a correctly oriented board. The pictures of the set on this Amazon listing show the INCORRECT board orientation that we received. Makes me wonder if somehow we’re getting the misprinted boards from some foreign factory.
2 – The pieces are not well thought out. A young kid learning chess is still learning which piece is which. Han Solo is the bishop? Boba Fett is a rook? Okay, I guess. It would have made sense to have the pieces differentiated by size, or by some kind of system so that a kid can tell which piece is which just by looking. All the characters, except for the pawns, are about the same height.
The pieces themselves are a kind of rubbery plastic, with weighted bottoms. The artwork and molding on them is pretty good, I would say. You recognize the Emperor, Obiwan, Luke, Leia, and Han by their uniforms, not by the detail on the faces, so no biggie that the facial detail is only adequate.
3 – $80? No. Just no. For $80 I expect a much nicer board, differentiated pieces, and a NICER RETAIL BOX. The cardboard the box came in is basically cardstock paper, and won’t last. The molded plastic that the pieces fit into for storage is also as thin as possible, and it rips as soon as it’s twisted in the slightest. In other words, the box it comes in is not storage for these pieces, which is just wrong.
– Our set was missing Yoda’s head. The Jedi side has Luke carrying Yoda in a backpack as the knight, and one of our Yoda heads were missing. Weird.

I really can’t believe that others have rated this item so high. My wife got it for me for Christmas. I would have been ok with it if she paid 20 bucks for it, my mouth dropped when I found out how much it cost. Which would have been ok if it would have been of good quality. Some of the pieces are a little warped, the game board looked like it went through the wash it is so warped. Not to mention the pieces don’t even look like the characters. I mean they are about as good as what I’ve seen at the dollar store. The stormtroopers look like they have a stick up their butt, and Hans head just doesn’t look right. Maybe it’s me, but I would think for 80 it would have been better. One thing if your buying a collectors item for someone, make sure you know what your buying. The only thing worse than getting a poor quality present is giving a poor quality present. I feel so bad that I don’t like it when she was so proud of it. I have nothing bad to say about the seller they kept up their end of the deal.
