While these aren’t the same as they were in the “old days” (70’s and 80’s for me), they’re still just as creative and educational as they ever were.
My 15 and 16 year old boys have actually turned off their computers and put down their devices and have been playing with these for hours! They’ve incorporated some old k’nex, legos, magnetix and hot wheels into a giant, fun mess in the family room. It’s warming my heart to see my almost-men playing together like when they were little. I’ll also admit, hubby and I have been playing with them too 🙂
The box comes with a brochure that has full-color pictures of some design ideas and directions on how to find many more for free.
I’m all about vintage toys but I have to admit, these tinker toys have the advantage of being a lot sturdier and the ability to be cleaned thoroughly in a bucket of hot, soapy water which couldn’t be done with the old tyoe. Having joined up with k’nex has made the design possibilities endless.
I think these are perfect for calm and mature preschool aged kids (3 and up) to any age.

This is a sturdy, versatile construction set that will provide hours of creative play for all ages over three (due to the choking hazard of small parts).
Pros:
*This is an all-plastic set. It would be easy to clean (or disinfect, if needed), and you don’t have to worry about any splinters or broken pieces. *The pieces are all very sturdy. *The colors are bright and vibrant. *There are enough pieces that two or three kids could easily work on their own projects simultaneously.
Cons:
*The box is much bigger than it needs to be. I appreciate having enough room to just throw everything in there to make clean-up easy, but even then, the box is half-empty. *The box does not have any sort of a carry strap, so it will be difficult for little ones to maneuver (especially given how big the box is). *There are too many connectors and pieces to connect the connectors. I feel like they threw in so many of these small, lesser-used pieces just to artificially inflate the piece count. *Some of the pieces are very difficult to take apart once they’re together, particularly the smaller pieces. Young children will likely have some frustrating moments due to this (I know I did!).
My first inclination was to give the set just three stars because I really do feel that the cons are significant issues. However, my teenage daughter and husband had so much fun playing with it, they thought the set should get four stars overall. This will definitely be something we break out on a regular basis for family game night.

Since I was small, I remember always having Tinker Toys at my house. My parents bought us the largest set they made and we had tons of ideas of what to build included. We actually built an entire amusement park with our set.
When the package arrived, I was surprised when my 15 year old ran out to the mail truck and jumped up and down when she saw the box being pulled out of the truck. She came in the back door of the house shouting, “They’re HERE! The Tinker Toys are HERE!” You would never know that she had lost her Tinker Toy set from when she was young and really didn’t pay much attention to it then.
WHAT IS THIS SET LIKE? K’Nex has been a favorite building toy of my kids and many others for years. I was very intrigued when I saw that they had bought out and re-designed the original Tinker Toy set to include what appears to be the best of both worlds. The pieces are all plastic, but they do fit together well. In fact, they seem to fit together better than the old set we no longer have.
The fascinating part is that there are bendable pieces so that you can make a lot more things.
DOES IT COME WITH INSTRUCTIONS? The little pamphlet that comes with the set is very basic. It has 15 ideas in it all pretty simple for even the youngest aspiring builder. I am thinking that these simple things won’t hold attention very long. There are 15 other building ideas you can get online using a special code they give you.
HOW DOES IT APPEAL? Well, my daughter has been playing with this set for about 10 hours in two days’ time now. She woke up early in the morning and headed right back to the Tinker Toys to work on something she designed- yes, my stories of amusement parks piqued her interest. At this time, she has designed a Ferris Wheel, a swing ride (like you see at the parks with swings that go around in a circle), and a fenced in area where she is designing animals to put in for another attraction. For this to appeal to a teen to this degree is quite interesting. She has claimed it as her own for the time being, until she is ready to let go of it and let the rest of us all play with it. I know am ready for a go at it sometime soon. Our entire family will play with this on a winter weekend- I can see a lot of family time associated with this.
WHAT I LIKE -parts are versatile -bendable parts make it more interesting -stays together better than the wood used to -bright colors make it fun to work with -parts are sturdy for younger users -larger parts for younger users
WHAT I DON’T LIKE -box is somewhat sturdy cardboard, but for the price it should come with something better -more ideas in a booklet would be fun (with more complexity) -that you have to go online to get the other ideas (not everyone has dependable internet)
FINAL COMMENTS Despite what I don’t like about the set, it is one of the best toys we have had in our family in a long while. It sparks delightful creativity and ingenuity. It would be great for a toy to spark interest at any age above 3 or 4 (3 or 4 having supervision), and older alone. I can also see this contributing greatly to home school situations and also when you would like to have kids play without electronic devices involved. Five stars for sure on this one!
