Let me start by saying I have a 5 year old and an almost 2 year old who both love trains. We actually found this set in KMART today for ~ $15 and I snatched it up. I then looked it up on Amazon.com to see if we could by extra track for it. (I just emailed Toystate.com to inquire as well.) Anyway, I saw a lot of negative comments on here so I felt the need to add my own FAIR review. First, this is NOT an expensive train set with metal cars and a remote control. FYI: There is a larger version of this same set that costs close to $50 so keep in mind this review is for the smaller $15 motorized set, which size wise is what we wanted. QUALITY/DURABILITY: Yes, the train cars are plastic, but good solid plastic – nothing flimsy here. The track itself is also plastic, but solid plastic and creates about a 3×2 foot oval, a little on the smaller side, but that was fine for me because I wanted this as a cool travel toy to take with us. The male/female connections where the track snap together are likely to snap off after repeated use by young children which is part of why I started searching immediately for extra track AND why I don’t mind helping to put the track together if it means saving the life of the train. This brings me to the derailment factor others have been speaking about. I suspect the other reviewers who had derailments may not have checked to ensure that each part of the track was perfectly snapped together, but that is an assumption. That being said, we’ve been playing with this for hours and have had NO derailments what-so-ever. AGE APPROPRIATE: I would say 5-7 years is probably accurate if you want the child to play with this set INDEPENDENTLY. My 5 year old has no difficulty lining this up on the track. He also had no trouble hooking one train car to the other which for us has been the hardest part with many “realistic” train sets. That being said, the tracks themselves may be hard for little hands to put together (my 5 year old could line up the male/female parts up well, but couldn’t quite get them snapped together) which can be frustrating for some children. This IS the first time we put it together and in my experience, these things get easier as the train is used – like new shoes that loosen after being worn a few times. I anticipate that he will have no problem putting it together after a few uses for independent play, but I don’t mind helping. For younger children, there were no small parts that I felt were dangerous to an infant/toddler/preschooler. In fact, my almost 2 year old went to town with the included mini-machines and she is rough! Also, this CAT train has a nice push button on top of the engine that my almost 2 year old can operate with ease. So, with adult assistance, younger children can play safely and easily with this set, in my opinion. (But, hey, I love playing trains WITH them!) EDUCATIONAL: It’s a train set, but with all of it’s cool features, I think it actually has some educational benefits. Fine motor skills are certainly working here and with it’s functionality, it has a realistic pretend play aspect that I think is noteworthy. (see below) AWESOMENESS FACTOR/FUN: This set has a AA battery operated MOTORIZED ENGINE easily operated with an on/off push button, a FLAT CAR that actually holds 2 of the removable CAT mini-machines (a FRONT LOADER and DUMP TRUCK come with the set), a CRANE CAR with a crane that has a nice strong magnet and a magnetic SHIPPING CONTAINER that you can pretend to load onto the last HOPPER CAR that also opens on one side. We loaded the hopper car with magnet balls (using the crane, of course) from our Magnetix set and they rolled out the side every time we opened the hopper – WHAT FUN! For me, these features on a simple train set are what made this train worth every penny! I also bought an extra set of mini-machines for about $6 at KMART and they truly added to the fun and made sharing with 2 children a bit easier. A great addition to the set… Toystate Caterpillar Construction Mini Machine 5-Pack Overall, I am bewildered by the negative reviews on here because our experience has been wonderful. This is a $15 train set people!!!! SERIOUSLY! A train with so many features that comes with 2 trucks, a motorized engine and 3 functioning train cars that isn’t flimsy as all get-out is AWESOME! —-UPDATE—–I heard back from ToyState.com by email in 1 day and you CAN buy extra track… SWEET!!! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? | Comment (1) Reply 27 of 29 people found the following review helpful Affordable, fun, and Functional, October 16, 2013 By DanWantsIn – Verified Purchase(What’s this?) This review is from: Toystate Caterpillar Construction Iron Diesel Train (Toy) This toy made a great gift for my 3 year old. The trick (and this is addressed to the people who said it was hard to get back on the track, especially for little kids) is to spend some time with your dang kids. Play with them, don’t just give them toys and assume they’re going to be just fine on their own. Jeez. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? | Comment Reply 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful Good Starter Set, December 20, 2014 By John Behring (Danville, CA) – Verified Purchase(What’s this?) This review is from: Toystate Caterpillar Construction Iron Diesel Train (Toy) Customer Video Review Length:: 9:27 Mins This is a good starter model train set. I would call this an HO scale train set or equivalent. The train itself is made of inexpensive plastic but it’s under $30. There is a lot of value built into this set. The flatbed carriers have removable trucks and a crane/container combo that you can also play with. Set requires 2, AA batteries to run but worth it. If they gave us more track and made the wheels come with real double truck axles this would be a 5 star toy! If your child is into trains they will have a lot of fun with this set. Furthermore, they will really be into this set if they are into trucks and trains!
