This review is from: Williams by Bachmann Christmas Special – O Scale Ready to Run Electric Train Set (Toy) I spent a lot of time researching O-Gauge Christmas train sets and ultimately went with this set and brand. My main point of comparison was the Lionel Polar Express set, which is immensely popular. But the various reviews about the spotty quality and my own experience with that set (the sound tender was inoperative, so I returned it for a refund) led me to try this set by Williams/Bachmann. While I only just received it and tried it out once, it worked great the first time! Time will tell how it holds up but I did want to share my shopping experience so that other casual enthusiasts looking for a nice Christmas addition will have some hopefully helpful information! One big selling point on the Lionel sets are all the bells and whistles, literally! Each car lights up, the tender has a variety of sounds, and the new 2014 models use direct current to the track along with a remote paired specifically to the locomotive. While all of that sounds great, I just felt like these things just added to the list of things that potentially go wrong with the set. It seems a common problem with Lionel is that the electric wiring isn’t that great and prone to failure. By contrast, this Christmas Special has a transformer that runs on AC current, and the tender just makes two sounds. The rest of the cars are not powered. So I really liked that it was simple and straightforward. As a matter of personal preference, I also liked the red/green color scheme vs. the darker Polar Express trains – just looked more Christmas-y to me! My only reason for giving it four stars instead of five is that the locomotive had a small part on the back that looked like it oxidized. Probably nothing some enamel paint couldn’t fix. Also, it pays to make sure that your tracks are well connected! I had a short my first time around which I solved by reconnecting the tracks. Overall I’m very pleased and I’m hopeful it will hold up for years to come! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? | Comment Reply 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful Nice Set, November 30, 2014 By Michael V. Mager – This review is from: Williams by Bachmann Christmas Special – O Scale Ready to Run Electric Train Set (Toy) Purchased for grandson’s first electric train. I am an experienced, 30 yr, N scale railroader. Overall this is a great set. I set it up and test ran it to avoid any unpleasant surprises on Christmas morning. The train runs very well and the sound system is good. This is a heavy engine and the transformer is very heavy ( a good thing ). While not absolutely necessary at the start they recommend lubing the wheels. No non modeler will have the right lube. They send the connection wires with a spade end and a pure wire end. These are the reasons I don’t rate it a 5 for the average person. I looked at it and one spade end had been crimped onto the insulation. This could have caused an issue with power flow and would have been hard to find. The other end was straight wire which they want you to trim the insulation back to attach to the track connections. Why when the rest of this looks good do they leave these details unfinished ? It’s crazy and inconsistent with the quality of the rest of the set. Both of these are easy things to do much better. I simply cut both ends of each wire and soldered on spades and now I have solid hookups. Bachman could do this very easily. Once running I could not get the train the sounds to work. I found I had to have the train running ( no problem ) and hold the bell button in a bit to get it to work and had to push the whistle in and hold till it worked. After I learned this, no problems and the sound is very good. Just would have been easier if the instructions were a bit better. The smoke unit worked well. The track goes together well and is sturdy. You do have to be careful to line the pins up and the base clips before you push them together as the pins are flat and are ok if lined up right, but can be bent if you are sloppy. . No model railroader would have any issue and neither would a person who is careful. It’s a great set and I recommend it at the price. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? | Comment Reply 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful Great Train Set!, January 2, 2014 By TDM (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA United States) – Verified Purchase(What’s this?) This review is from: Williams by Bachmann Christmas Special – O Scale Ready to Run Electric Train Set (Toy) I read a lot of reviews for various train sets as this was my first. I was buying it for my 3 year old grandson. The set was perfect and as described. I have had no problems with it at all and it appears to be very sturdy and reliable. The smoke feature is great and works without any issues. Great set, easy to put together and my grandson loved it. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? | Comment Reply Leave a comment Cancel replyYour email address will not be published.
