This review is from: Woodland Scenics N Scale Town and Factory Building Set (Toy) I started getting to work on this kit last night. Each building is packaged as a stand alone kit, so there are some inconsistencies between buildings. Pros:– Great assortment of buildings (Different shapes, sizes, and styles)– Good Detailing– Price per building can’t be beat.– Nice selection of decals and advertisements for your buildings.– A good sized bag of random accessories (light posts, dumpsters, ladders, etc..) Cons (keep in mind these are what allow you to get 13 buildings for less than $10 a piece):– Decent amount of flash from the molding process. It’s not hard to remove, it’s just something you need to do for every wall.– The edges of the walls are tapered from the mold. You need to sand them flat. Again, very easy to do. It’s just an extra step– Not all buildings come with a roof piece. Several of them do, but the ones that don’t provide you with a piece of styrene that you need to cut to fit (This one bummed me out a little). However, at least they include the material in the kit.– These buildings have the windows built into the walls from the get go. With some other brands, the window pieces are separate. You can take all the window pieces, spray them white, and then just insert them. These windows, as they are already built into the walls, will need to be painted by hand. All in all, I really look forward to putting these together. If you enjoy modelling, don’t let the cons scare you away. They’ll still be easy enough to assemble, they’ll just take some patients. I’m fine with that seeing as this is probably the best deal on the internet for buildings, especially ones this nice. The included hotel is gorgeous, and I can’t wait to get that one together. All the pieces seem to be cut to proper dimensions and everything seems to line up as it should. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the need to cut some of the roofs out yourself. I would have really liked to not have to do that on some of the buildings. Regardless, I highly recommend this kit. This review is from: Woodland Scenics N Scale Town and Factory Building Set (Toy) The Woodland Scenics Town and Factory building set was a Christmas present from my wife. It is a great collection of Design Preservation Model buildings. Everything you need to start your own town scape on a N-scale model railroad. The kits are not difficult to assemble, but require care. The extra dry transfer decals and accessories help add the next level of detail. The kits are diverse and fairly straight forward in their constructure in that they are all pretty much a collection of plastic boxes. The upside is that you can kit bash these kits so that several of the store fronts can be joined together to make a city block. The downside is that the window and door details are cast into the walls so that painting is very time consuming and requires a steady hand. (Remember, we’re talking N scale here). Masking the doors/windows for painting is just as hard as ‘free handing’ it so I just resort to hand painting and go back to fix any ‘bad’ edges. I recommend refraining from drinking any coffee when attempting this step. They also provide a large amount of metal castings (light posts, boxes, drums, piles of junk, etc.) which is nice but my batch had a very large amount of flash on just about every piece which, on the average, took about tens minutes per piece to clean up. If you don’t mind doing the clean up, I guess that is okay but for the price of the collection, I’d expect a better product. You’re also provided with a fair amount of dry transfers (which I HATE) that are included for building signs and the like. The transfers are difficult to apply and usually break up into pieces during the application process, essentially rendering them useless. Why some manufacturers persist in supplying dry transfers instead of good old reliable decals is beyond me.So, if your looking for a fast and dirty way to populate your city scene, you can’t go wrong with this collection but don’t expect too much.
